The ship Zim Djibouti left Vancouver today (August 26). This is a historic moment for Craft in Canada, since in it’s hold is the largest collection of contemporary Canadian Craft ever assembled.
Headed for the Cheongju International Craft Biennale (CICB) are the 49 crates containing the Unity and Diversity Exhibition. This 200 piece(11 from Saskatchewan) juried exhibition is valued at $1,029,000 and forms the cornerstone of Canada’s presence as guest country at the CICB.
Also in the hold of the Zim Bjibouti are another 29 crates containing 4,222 pieces of craft (1,046 from Saskatchewan) destined for sale at the Canadian Boutique at the CICB. This $275,000 worth of craft will give 89 craft artists (13 from Saskatchewan) sales and commercial exposure into this rapidly growing Asian market.
The CICB runs from September 23 to November 1. This craft exposition is expected to attract over 580,000 visitors from over 50 countries.
Saskatchewan's participation is made possible with the generous support of the Saskatchewan Arts Board and Kramer Ltd. |

Saskatchewan Minerals Inc. proudly shipped its 10 millionth ton of sodium sulphate from its plant at Chaplin, Saskatchewan on August 13, 2009.
“Shipping of our 10 millionth ton represents a significant milestone in the history of Saskatchewan Minerals,” Corporation President and CEO Rodney McCann said. “We have been able to reach this important milestone because of our team of loyal and dedicated employees.”
To celebrate the historic event, Saskatchewan Minerals unveiled a specially painted railcar to be added to its customized fleet of nearly 140 leased railcars.
McCann said Saskatchewan Minerals is proud of its place as one of North America’s largest producers of natural sodium sulphate. “The Chaplin plant shipped its first car load of sodium sulphate in 1948,” he said.
Saskatchewan Minerals is a North American market leader in production of high quality natural sodium sulphate. More than 80 domestic and international customers use sodium sulphate from the Chaplin plant in detergents, starch, carpet deodorizers and livestock feed and in the production of pulp, paper, glass and textiles.
McCann said donations will also be made to Ducks Unlimited and the Chaplin Nature Centre in the name of the customer receiving the 10 millionth ton.
Saskatchewan Minerals Inc. uses several Caterpillar track-type tractors at its Chaplin plant, including a Caterpillar D8T, a Caterpillar D8N and a Caterpillar D7H.
